The main Opposition Party Citizens’ Coalition for Change has joined all African countries in commemorating the 59th anniversary of Africa Day.
This year’s Africa Day is celebrated under the theme: ‘Strengthening Resilience in Nutritious and Food Security on the Africa Continent: Strengthening Agro-Food System, Health and Social Protection System for the Acceleration of Human, Social and Economic Capital Development.
In a statement CCC Secretary for International Relations Gladys Hlatywayo, said CCC salutes the founding fathers of Africa for establishing the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU) in 1963 which was later transformed to Africa Union (AU) in 2002.
“The 2022 AU theme on the nutrition is timely given the difficult circumstance that Africa finds itself in as a result of climate change the Covid-19 pandemic and the war of Ukraine that have led to depressed crops yields and disrupted global food supply chains.
“The theme offers an opportunity for members states to seriously reflect on the Malabo Commitments and the targets set under the Africa Regional Nutritional Strategy (2016-2025) to end the malnutrition in all its forms and improve the food security situation in the continent. Human Capital is central to development as it leads to improved quality of life and high productivity for countries,” she said.
Hlatywayo added that, they urge African leaders and stakeholders to support the agenda policy on nutrition by investing in intra-African trade and continental food self-sufficiency and also investing in financing agriculture to improve lives in Africa.
She further added that Africa as a whole need to address issues to do with corruption, patronage, political conflicts, bad policies and governance challenges in order to improve food security and nutrition issues since they are worsening the food security and nutrition issues in countries like Zimbabwe.
“In the spirit of African solidarity and oneness as espoused by our African founding fathers, we urge fellow Africans to stand in firm solidarity with such countries that are facing governance challenges in pursuit of the continental vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.
“We rise or fall together as a continent! One Africa, One Vision! Happy Africa Day,” she said.
