Zimbabwe’s AFCON dreams went up in smoke yesterday after the Warriors were expelled from the 2023 Afcon qualifers by the Confederation Of African Football (CAF).
Zimbabwe was thrown out of the Qualifiers after the Sport Recreation Commisision failed to reinstate the Felton Kamambo led ZIFA board.
CAF had included them in the official draw earlier in April 2022 on condition that the suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match day.
In a statement, the African football mother body confirmed the suspension.
“As a consequence of having failed to have their suspensions by FIFA set aside, CAF has confirmed that both Kenya and Zimbabwe will not participate in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers,’’CAF said.
In November 2021,Sports and Recreation Commission suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association board citing gross incompetence.
In return Zimbabwe was suspended by the world’s football governing body, FIFA, owing to government interference in the operations of the national football federation.
