The government has come under fire for its decision to remove the Nguni shield that was on the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo (JNM) International Airport signage.
The signage which had the shield was pulled down and replaced with a new one which has national colours and the coat of arms, attracting the wrath of the Ndebele community.
In a tweet, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the last surviving son of the late liberation icon ,criticized the decision which he said was a blatant disregard of the Ndebele culture by the government.
“I couldn’t believe that this government can disregard a people’s culture and heritage like this. I had to go and confirm.
This is an insult to Joshua Nkomo, to Zimbabwe, To our history, heritage and culture. This is not what Joshua Nkomo stood for,” he said.
The shield had been part and parcel of the airport signage since the commissioning of the new terminal complex in 2013 and has been hailed as a cultural symbol.
Meanwhile the Airports Company of Zimbabwe is yet to issue a statement to that effect.
