Former Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba who was allegedly abducted from his home at the weekend has reportedly returned home unharmed.
Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) for which Gomba is Glen Norah Ward 27 election candidate claimed on Saturday Gomba had been forcibly taken away from his home Saturday night by unknown men.
The party’s spokesperson Fadzai Mahere in a Twitter message to supporters said “Police Law and Order Section had defined any involvement and lawyers are now searching everywhere for his whereabouts.”
“They’ve since checked at Milton Park, Hillside, Rhodesville, Highfields, Mbare and Southerton stations but he’s not there, “ she said.
Mahere added that, “We remain troubled by the fact that Herbet Gomba remains unaccounted for. Any leads to his where about would be most appreciated. Our lawyers have searched for him at all detention centres on Harare and he is not there.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Sunday said “Gomba had not been arrested.”
But early Monday the CCC again resorted to Twitter to announce Gomba “Has been found and is in the custody of his family.”
There were no further details. Party supporters and other ordinary citizens in comments on the same thread demanded an explanation from Gomba and the party while critics argued “This was another of the opposition’s fake abduction stories.
Gomba is contesting for Municipal ward in Glen Norah, after he was recalled by Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC- T for siding with Chamisa in 2020
