As the 16 days of activism against Gender based violence (GBV) against women and girls are coming to an end, the public is urged to continue living in harmony.

The 16 days are a campaign period to challenge violence against women and girls, even though men are also victims.

The campaign runs annually from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on 10 December which is the Human Rights Day.

Speaking to TechMag TV the Executive Director for Women’s Action Group (WAG) Edinah Masiyiwa urged the country to observe ‘365 days of activism against GBV’ not only the 16.

“We commemorate these 16 days to just lift up our voices but we say it should be 365 days,” she pleaded.

Masiyiwa added that during the 16 days they continued with their core mandate of raising awareness and reminding people about the evil of violence.

Zimbabwe is among the African countries that have high rates of GBV against women with 1 of 3 women aged 15 to 49 having experienced physical violence and about 1 of 4 women having experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

However, men are also victims of GBV but rarely report about them probably because of dignity.

Men are also urged to report such cases as there are also groups that represent men’s rights such as Padare/Enkundhleni and “Varume Svinurayi”(meaning Abused men Open Your Eyes).
