Zimbabwe has recorded a sharp increase in new Covid-19 infections for the past five days with cases almost doubling.
According to statistics released by the ministry of health and child care,cases have risen to 712 new cases a day,up from 399 new cases recorded on Wednesday.
Public Health Practitioner,Itai Rusike attributed the spike in cases to returning citizens who are entering the country using illegal ports of entries.
“We are aware that we have got a lot of Zimbabweans that are based in South Africa and Botswana, and the majority of them were going to come back home for the festive season and it then creates that challenge, the risk of transmission, given the fact that our land borders are very porous,”he said
A total of 1415 new cases have been recorded in the country in the last five days .
On Tuesday,the country resolved to tighten Covid-19 restrictions following the discovery of the Omicron variant in Botswana.
President Mnangagwa declared that all travelers will undergo a COVID-19 test at Zimbabwe’s ports of entry and travelers and returning citizens to have mandatory quarantine at their own expense.
As at 01 December 2021, Zimbabwe had 135 337 confirmed cases, including 128 784 recoveries and 4 707 deaths.
To date, a total of 3 809 048 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Meanwhile the country is targeting to inoculate at least 10 million of its approximately 15 million citizens by year-end to achieve herd immunity.
