The Zimbabwe Heads Of Christian Denominations have called on the government to implement electoral reforms to ensure peace during elections.

In a statement, the ZHOCD said that it expects the government to lay down the foundation for a peaceful election period well before the plebiscite takes place.

“The ZHOCD expects that the authorities will implement essential electoral reforms well before elections take place, expects that the leadership of all political parties will take responsibility to preserve and protect the lives of citizens,”the group said.

The Zimbabwean government has been under pressure to implement electoral reforms which civil societies and the opposition players say is crucial in championing a democratic and peaceful election.

Over the years, the election period has been characterized by violence and voter intimidation.

In 2008,Zimbabwe witnessed it’s most violent plebiscite in which several opposition activists were killed and others tortured when the ruling ZANU PF lost to the MDC in the first round of the general elections.
