The Warriors chances of participating at the forthcoming 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are now in jeopardy after the Sports and Recreation Committee (SRC) suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) executive committee.
The SRC said that the suspension was necessitated by the gross incompetency of the ZIFA executive committee.
However the move could have severe repercussions for the nation as the country could be banned from international competitions due to government interference.
In a statement, SRC chairmain Gerald Mlotshwa said that they were prepared for any eventuality.
“If FIFA decides to ban Zimbabwean football we are prepared for that. If it does happen we look at it being a short-term measure,”.
Football’s world governing body FIFA disapproves of governmental interference in the running of member associations and has banned countries from all forms of football as a result in the past.
The suspension has severely affected football activities as referees boycotted Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches in solidarity with the board.
