ZEC urged to be impartial and independent

The Election Resource Center has called on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to impartial when carrying out its duties.

ZEC has over the years come under scrutiny for it’s partisan manner in the general elections and ERC urged the electoral body to serve the interests if the people.

“In administering its constitutional mandate to oversee elections, Zec must be impartial and independent.

Zec’s activities, decisions and roles must not be influenced by anyone. More so, there ought to be transparency and accountability (responsibility to justify actions or decisions) to citizens, political parties and independent observers,” ERC said.

Last week ZEC was heavily criticized for unconstitutionally excluding the MDC Alliance from a stakeholders meeting that was being held at the ZEC offices.

In 2018,the electoral body was accused of manipulating the poll results in favour of ZANU PF to keep the ruling party in power for another 5 years.

The ZEC board consists of people with ties to ZANU PF,hence it’s credibility and independence has always been questioned.
