Chimurenga music icon Thomas Mapfumo has warned the ZANU PF government against destroying the opposition parties, saying such a move undermined the wishes of the people.
In an interview with New Zimbawe, the legendary crooner said that there was need for genuine talks between ZANU PF and the largest opposition party MDC Alliance to find ways to resolve the economic woes bedevilling the country.
“There should be a round table to discuss issues between Zanu PF and the MDC Alliance party leaders. Fights and looting of state resources will not take you anywhere,” Mapfumo said.
Mukanya, as he is affectionately known is a fierce critic of the ZANUPF government.
In 2001 he fled Zimbabwe at the height of political repression under Robert Mugabe.
Mapfumo became disenchanted with the government as Mugabe and his ministers enriched themselves while Zimbabweans became more destitute.
In 2020, the Supreme Court gave a controversial ruling that Advocate Nelson Chamisa’s ascension to the helm of power was in violation of his party’s constitution.
Opposition figures and civil societies see the court challenge as an attempt by ZANU PF to destroy the 22-year-old opposition party using the courts, hence Mukanya warned the government not to underestimate the will of the people as they were the deciding factor.
“Do as what the citizens are crying for. You do not destroy opposition parties. Parliament (and local council) recalls have caused disunity among leaders of parties,” Mukanya added.
