The Centre for Conflict Management Trust (CCMT) recently facilitated a virtual meeting which was organized by UNESCO and EU in a bid to train journalists who are mainly from the Zimbabwe Online Content Creators (ZOCC) from different media houses on conflict reporting.
The training program highlighted issues related to mal information, disinformation, and misinformation.
Journalists were urged to take into consideration cultural, traditional, relationships, and values amongst others to enhance their journalism skills especially pertaining to the matter.
Richard Chere who represented CCMT urged journalists to use certain strategies when dealing with conflict-sensitive reporting which included the use of necessary language, exchanging questions, avoid labeling, helping people understand each other’s values, joint interviews, profiling peacemakers and the key people in the process and also asking all parties the same questions.
“This is why conflict-sensitive reporting becomes key for journalists to reflect and inquire on available information to strike balance in their reportage,”he said.
