The Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested two suspects who were found in possession of narcotics.
Gift Mutekesa (46) of Bulawayo and Johane Sithole (31) a Mozambican national appeared before Chipinge Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzu facing charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.
The police had received a tip off that the suspects were smuggling contraband into the country from Mozambique and bound for Checheche.
The ZRP responded swiftly to the tip off by mounting a roadblock in a dusty road in Checheche.
The move paid off as the suspects drove towards the roadblock and then made a U-turn and fled the scene upon realising that there was the police ahead.
A high speed chase ensued resulting in the police apprehending the suspects.
The suspects were remanded in custody and will be back in court on August 11.
The police confiscated contraband of 221kgs of mbanje with a street value of US$221 000 from the crime scene.
Efforts to get a comment from Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi were fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered at the time of publication.
