MDC Alliance family plunged into mourning following the death of Kwekwe Deputy Mayor, Councillor Shadreck Tobaiwa.
The sad news was announced by the country’s biggest opposition party Deputy Spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo.
Posting on microblogging, Twitter, Hlatywayo said:
“A veteran local gvt practitioner, City of Kwekwe Deputy Mayor, Cllr Shadreck Tobaiwa has passed on. He was Kwekwe Mayor from 2008-2013. He was in the @MdcMidlands Provincial Executive. Cllr Tobaiwa has been promoted to Glory today. MHSRIP.”
Mayor Tobaiwa joined MDC in 1999 on the party’s formation.
He was Kwekwe District (Kwekwe Central and Mbizo Constituency were combined) Chairperson from 2000 to 2005.
In 2008, he became Ward 8 councilor, leading to his appointment as Kwekwe City Mayor (the first opposition Mayor of Kwekwe) from 2008-2013 and won Best Mayor’s awards twice.
For over a decade he has been a provincial executive member.
In 2018 he was reelected as ward 8 councilor and subsequently elected Deputy Mayor of Kwekwe.
Kwekwe Central Youth Assembly Secretary for communication, Onius Tanaka Rusike described Tobaiwa as a disciplined and dedicated democrat.
“Mr Tobaiwa was the most disciplined and hardworking democrat whose works and contribution to the struggle are easy to trace. He dedicated his whole life to the Transformation of Zimbabwe. He never fought or contested for party positions. He was more concerned about the people of Zimbabwe. His sacrifice and hardwork will never go unnoticed, ” Rusike said.
