Review frontline workers’ salaries urgently: Chamisa

0

MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa has called for the urgent review of front-line workers’ salaries who are being exposed to COVID19 while rendering services.

Despite being frontline workers, they take home approximately $28,000 ZWL a month, but rising inflation has further eroded the income.

Posting on Microblogging site Twitter, Chamisa called for an urgent review to restore a decent wage for the workers who are at risk.

“Review frontline workers’ salaries urgently These patriots are putting their lives at risk during this pandemic only to receive peanuts as a salary. “

“Please use the surplus to restore the dignity of our frontline workers and civil service as a whole,” he said.

The government announced the reintroduction of the US$75 a month Covid-19 allowance for all civil servants in January.

However, the risk allowance is made inclusive of the monthly salaries.

Chamisa said, “A junior doctor earns approx. $28,000 ZWL a month which is $207 at the real market rate.”

“Which is inclusive of a COVID allowance of $70 USD risk allowance at paid bank rate equaling to $6000ZWL.”

Health workers went on strike last year demanding risk allowances as well as personal protective equipment to help deal with the deadly virus.

They returned to work after the government committed to working on the complaints

Zimbabweans have been experiencing low salaries even before the pandemic hit the country.
