The Zimbabwe National Army Commander Edzai Absolom Chanyuka Chimonyo has died. early on Thursday after succumbing to cancer, the presidential spokesman George Charamba has said.
Lieutenant General Edzayi Chimonyo, who was appointed to the position after the November 2017 coup, had been battling cancer, the presidential spokesman wrote on Twitter.
“Devastating to announce the passing of General Chimonya early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well Freedom Fighter, Commander and Ambassador,” twitted Charamba @jamwanda2.
Chimonyo succeeded the late former 5th Brigade Commander Perrance Shiri as the Commander during Gukurahundi genocide.
He also took over from General Philip Valerio Sibanda, who was promoted to be the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (CDF)
Before he was appointed as the Commander of the ZNA, Chimonyo was on secondment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Tanzania.
Chimonyo, like all the current crop of military generals in Zimbabwe, is a former fighter in the country’s 1970s war of independence.
