The ruling party, ZANU PF is preparing for by-elections despite the suspension due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced the resumption of voter registration and other related fieldwork at the start of April but by-elections were still suspended.

In a circular directed to all ZANU PF provincial chairpersons, the party’s Acting Secretary for Commissariat, Patrick Chinamasa the party called for MPs and Councilors to apply.

“All Provinces are directed to call for submission of Curriculum Vitaes (CVS) by 16 July 2021 for all vacant National Assembly and Local Government seats where Primary Elections have not been held yet.”

“On receipt of the CVs, Provincial Election Directorate, should meet to consider the CVS, make comments and recommendations for each of the applicants.”

“Provinces should then forward the CVs to the Commissariat Department at Party Headquarters for vetting and approval,” reads the circular.

Chiwenga, through Statutory Instrument 225 of 2020, indefinitely banned the holding of all by-elections as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19. ZEC went on to endorse the policy stance.

Organizations appealed to the High Court seeking an order to compel President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to set dates for by-elections in compliance with the Constitution and Electoral Act.
