The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has doubled fares with effect from 1 July 2021.
According to the new fare structure, passengers will now pay $ZWL 60 per trip for short distances, while for 40km fares are now pegged at ZWL$110.
The last increase was in January.
In a public notice, ZUPCO announced the price hike.
Reacting to the double increase in fares, Zimbos took it out on Twitter.
@TTNdemera Using interbank rate, ZUPCO is now more expensive than Kombis were before they were banned! Stability
@incognito_tony The last increase marked the end of the ‘subsidy’ and the current fares are commercial and at par with private operators (who don’t operate at a loss!. These new fares are blatant extortion!! pure profiteering.
The government introduced ZUPCO buses in January 2019, with subsidized prices that were meant to relieve passengers from exorbitant prices from Kombi operators due to fuel price hikes.
However, the ZUPCO fares have since been going up.
Twitter users went on to blast the hike which is now at par with Mushika shika operators.
