MDC- T President Douglas Mwonzora has pleaded with ZANUPF leader , Emmerson Mnangwagwa to completely cancel the impending by elections in a bid to create a false image that his party , MDCT is the official opposition entity in Zimbabwe.
Mwonzora met Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga on June 11 where he presented a document which his party has not publicly disclosed.
This was revealed in a four paged document leaked to the media.
“It is, therefore, suggested that while discussions are going on regarding aforementioned issues, by-elections be suspended. In order to avoid prejudice to the electorate, it is suggested that an arrangement be made for parties to make replacements of vacancies in their areas of control as guided by law.”
Mwonzora justified the proposal to suspend by-elections, saying it would give Zimbabweans time to “find each other”.
“While Zimbabweans are talking and finding each other in this serious manner it seems unnecessary to introduce something divisive as by-elections,” he said in the statement.
“It is, therefore, suggested that while discussions are going on regarding aforementioned issues, by-elections be suspended.”
In March the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission suspended by elections citing the Covid-19 public health emergency.
Up to now no date has been set for the elections to resume, the parties will use the elections as a barometer of their public support ahead of elections in 2023.
