MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa has blasted the government for their ongoing act of demolitions while calling them an illegal act.
There has been the demolition of illegal structures by the council in Harare.
On Saturday council workers backed by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) destroyed stalls belonging to informal traders in Mbare.
Illegal structures around Mupedzanhamo, Magaba Home Industry, Shawasha, and Matapi Flats were all demolished.
Posting on Microblogging site Twitter, Chamisa said such actions by the government are not normal, and are just destroying peoples livelihoods.
“An illegal government cannot demolish illegal structures, It can’t be normal for a government to specialize in destruction and demolition.”
“And why always ‘murambatsvina’ during cold winters? Unless we deal with the illegal structure produced by rigged elections, illegalities will be difficult to stop.”
Chamisa blasted the demolitions which are a replica of what happened in 2005, under operation Murambatsvina.
Operation Murambatsvina was a large-scale, slum clearance operation in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Kariba and Victoria Falls. Launched on 18 May 2005, it resulted in an estimated 700,000 people losing their homes and/or livelihoods, with a further 2.4 million people indirectly affected. An estimated 92 460 homes were destroyed during the blitz.
The operation continued throughout the month of June, and affected virtually every town and rural business center in the country.
