The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has staged a flash demonstration in Harare over the collapsing education system
The demo took place at the Mbuya Nehanda statue in Harare and demonstrator were holding placards demanding capital holding placards demanding better salaries and working conditions
Teachers welfare has been under the spotlight and before the Covid-19-induced shutdown of schools in March last year ,Zimbabwe’s education system was left in a shambles after all three teachers’ unions said their members would go on strike for higher wages.
Teachers salaries has been eroded over the past two years from a minimum of $480, as Zimbabwe has switched from using the US dollar as its main currency to using the local currency, as its financial crisis has deepened due to severe foreign currency shortages and runaway inflation.
Teachers have been lobbying the government to restore their salary in US dollars or equivalent in local currency. However the government shot down the idea ,citing incapacitation to pay in foreign currency.
