Zimbabwe has reached a milestone in COVID-19 vaccinations after administering 1 million jabs.

In comments posted to Twitter, information secretary,Nick Mangwana confirmed the development.

“Sometime late on Saturday afternoon an unknown Zimbabwean was given the millionth jab in the national Covid-19 vaccination programme, marking another milestone in the long but steady progress to achieve herd immunity”,said Mangwana.

The country began its COVID-19 vaccination program in February and the government aims to vaccinate more than 10 million of its citizens by end of year.

Zimbabwe has received batches of COVID-19 vaccine from China, Russia as well as India and this month, the government is expected to receive 500,000 Sinopharm vaccine doses which were ordered from China.

The milestone comes at a time when there have been fears about the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic following the detection of the Indian B.1.617.2 variant

The inoculation once completed is expected to return life to normalcy after more than a year in lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
