MDC Alliance Youth Leader Obey Sithole who is currently in custody on alleged criminal nuisance said the repressive gesture by the regime will not dampen the people’s spirit to bring a complete change in the country.
The vibrant youth leader was arrested on Monday for allegedly participating in a demonstration early this month.
His crime was singing protest songs with the lyrics “haikona kutamba neropa revakomana” and held placards inscribed “Free Mako, Free Joana, Ziyambi Must Go”.
The two are currently languishing in prison over laughable accusations.
Speaking Wednesday morning at the Harare Magistrate Courts, Obey Sithole said:
“What the state is trying to do is to silence the voices of the young people because it is us the young people who are suffering the most. In as much as we want to try to raise our voices, they (the state agents) are also determined to silence us. What I want to say to the young people is that remain calm and determined to free the people of Zimbabwe.”
He added that if the young people of yesteryear took up arms and fought for the liberation war, the current group of young people should follow suit and free themselves through constitutional means.
“It is also incumbent upon us as the young people to come together and take up whatever that can be taken as provided for in the constitution and fight for democracy and freedom. What we also need to ensure is that there is no struggle that has no scars and what we are seeing today is party of the struggle,” he added.
“What I want to assure you is that freedom is going to be a reality in our generation, freedom is going to be a reality in our lifetime. In simple terms, the current government has failed to resolve the existing economic problems and now wants to spend its energy on already struggling citizens.”
The Emmerson Mnangagwa led government has been unleashing terror on opposition forces especially the young voices since the controversial 2018 elections.
The widespread human rights abuses by the current government have seen MDC Alliance Harare West legislator, Joana Mamombe, and another youth leader Cecilia Chimbiri detained for more than 53 days without trial.
Meanwhile, Sithole’s bail ruling is set for today Thursday afternoon with 30 minutes remaining before his case is heard in the courts.
