Govt has no capacity to pay USD salaries: Mavima

Government says that it has no capacity to pay salaries in United States Dollars for civil servants due to low revenue.

This was revealed by Public Service and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima while addressing the issue of civil servants’ salaries.

Since last year teachers have been demanding restoration of salaries to Pre 0ctober 2018 pegged at $520.

During the address Mavima said ,” With regard to salaries, government is working out to ensure that workers are motivated properly, but the workers should also appreciate efforts that are being made by government.”

“The salaries would be in local currency as the government had no capacity to pay United States dollar-indexed salaries.”

“According to our revenue at the moment, it is not possible for us to go beyond what we have already offered, “ he said.

He added that they may actually adjust or increase, but not with a big percentage as they stand guided by the Finance ministry.

As the impasse between government and teachers continues, raising the staggered 70 percent salary increment has been considered.

In March government announced a salary increment and teachers threatened a full-blown strike.
Teachers are currently earning between $17 000 and $22 000, which they say is below the poverty datum line.
