Low vaccine uptake in Mash west, Midlands provinces

“Zimbabweans will get the vaccine for free, but for foreigners who come here, they will receive the vaccine at a cost. This is a human element, we cannot deny anybody the vaccine, but if you are not Zimbabwean we will give you the vaccine at a cost,” President Mnangagwa said.

Vaccination uptake in the Mashonaland West and Midlands provinces have been low since the administration of vaccines , while government is targeting to inoculate 10 million people of the population and achieve head immunity.

The country is currently in its second phase of the inoculation program.

Government has raised concerns over the low uptake with The Vice President, who is also the Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga calling for strategies to increase uptake.

Speaking in Chinhoyi during a provincial Covid-19 taskforce the health Minister said , “Mashonaland West and Midlands remain the two provinces with low figures. Matabeleland North has quite good figures probably because President Mnangagwa got his first jab there. “

“We need to come up with strategies that will help increase the vaccines uptake here in Mashonaland West.”
Zimbabwe launched the first phase of its vaccination drive on Feb. 18 after receiving its first batch of Sinopharm vaccines that were donated by China.

While the first phase targeted frontline health workers, journalists, prison officers as well as ports and immigration officials, the second phase is targeting teachers, the clergy, members of the security sector, the elderly and people with chronic conditions, among other priority groups.
