No free jab for non permanent foreigners: ED

ZimbabweÕs President Emmerson Mnangagwa receives his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Mnangagwa recently launched the second phase of ZimbabweÕs vaccination program in Victoria Falls aimed at reviving international tourism and prioritising the countryÕs elderly and teaching staff.

President Emmerson  Mnangagwa said there will be no free Covid 19 jab to foreigners who are not permanently staying in the  country.

Addressing media  yesterday, President Mnangagwa said  foreigners will have to pay for Covid 19 vaccination  which is currently being administered for free to locals.

“Zimbabweans will get the vaccine for free, but for foreigners who come here, they will receive the vaccine at a cost,”

“This is a human element when we cannot deny anybody the vaccine, but if you are not Zimbabwean, we will give you the vaccine at a cost. But for Zimbabweans, my government is giving it for free. I would want all my people to realise that getting a vaccine is not a guarantee that they will never get the virus, but it mitigates against the infection of the virus.”

This was however confirmed by permanent secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting, Nick Mangwana who said non Zimbabweans who are lawfully staying in the country will not pay for the jab but rather foreigners will have to pay.

“Legal residents of Zimbabwe are vaccinated for free. Tourists pay. And some people may make a decision to come from one of our neighbouring countries to get a vaccine in Zimbabwe, those pay too,” he tweeted yesterday.”

However, when South Africa started its vaccination program it announced that it was to cater for everyone in the country including foreigners for free.

193 936 have received their first jab as the country targets to vaccinate 10 million people, which is about 60 percent of the population.
