MDC Alliance national executive and youth leader Makomborero Haruzivishe was Tuesday sentenced to fourteen months in prison following his conviction on two separate charges.
Zimbabwe’s main opposition party says the government is again cracking down on critics with a prison sentence given to 28-year old Makomborero Haruzivishe. A court found him guilty of inciting violence, but rights groups say the real aim is to intimidate protesters demanding more financial support for the poor.
His lawyer Kossam Ncube said
” the facts upon which the court relied on to arrive at the decision to convict …. therefore it was a serious misdirection on the part of the courts to convict him and we are definitely taking it on appeal”
Mdc A Vice President Tendai Biti said
” its a sad day for democracy ..confirms complete emasculation of state institutions in Zimbabwe…the conviction and heavy sentence is meant to send a chilling effect for the democratic movement in Zimbabwe….”
Government spokesperson Perm Secretary Nick Mangwana supported the heavy sentence saying.
” you incite violence… is it a criminal act in our statutes yes it is…WAS THERE EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM THE COURT DETERMINED SO..”
Critics say this is just a circus arresting a 28 year old for whistling and not only that to make noise about such cowardice.
Mako shouted the struggle continues when he was being walked to prison.
