Activist Makomborero Haruzivishe has been sentenced to serve 24 months in prison on count one of which 10 months were suspended. On second count Mako will serve 12 months of which 6 months are suspended by Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga.
Last week Taruvinga convicted Haruziviishe (29), an executive member of the MDC Alliance, on charges of inciting public violence and resisting police arrest.
His case was likely to face a possible 20-year-jail sentence following his conviction.
MDC Alliance spokesperson and lawyer Fadzayi Mahere spoke to the media outside court following his sentence saying that a bail appeal is being filed to the High Court.
“His lawyers are definitely going to file for appeal this week so that he gets a lesser sentence , we want to make sure that he gets bail pending appeal so that he gets less time incarcerated.”
“We all know that the conviction is extremely controversial even the reasons for a custodian, “ Mahere said.
Haruziviishe is being allegedly accused of whistling to incite vendors to revolt against police brutality on 5 February 2020 at the corner of First Street and Nelson Mandela Avenue in Harare.
