The MDC Alliance is saddened by the 39th arrest of one of its members Makomborero Haruzivise(Mako). The party of Excellence said they are concerned about weaponisation and political persecution suffered by Mako whilst commenting on its Twitter handle (MDC Alliance) concerning his arrest, as the party said their members are being convicted on cases that have no evidence.

“We are extremely concerned by the weaponization of the law against our members, especially Makomborero, who is a victim of political persecution. Mako is a well-known activist who is being targeted because he is vocal about the poverty, injustice and corruption”

According to Makomborero’s lawyer, the conviction of his client is not clear based on the available evidence.

“According to his lawyers, the conviction itself is controversial as it is based on circumstantial evidence. He was convicted of resisting the arrest of a police officer who gave evidence that he was not the one who arrested Mako”

They further added that Makomborero was not part of the violence incited.

“The court further convicted him of inciting violence at Chicken Inn, First Street on a day vendors had running battles with the police, as they often do when they are attacked for “illegal vending”. He was not part of the protesting vendors.”

“We will pursue multiple strategies to challenge these threats to our democracy”
