Persecution of Political Opponents Must End In Zimbabwe – UK Minister

UK Minister For Africa James Duddridge has called upon state authorities to end harassment and unfair incarceration of political opponents.

His remarks comes after MDC Alliance members Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri were denied bail by the High Court of Zimbabwe last week.

Posting on Microblogging site Twitter Duddridge said, “ Bail denied again for Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri in Zimbabwe.”

“ I call on Zimbabwe’s authorities to ensure all are treated equally under the law, and to show action on the government’s commitments to reform. Harassment of political opponents needs to end,” he said.

The call to end harassment comes after a few days when the EU in Zimbabwe condemned the High Court ruling denying the MDC Alliance duo bail.

“Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri have been denied bail again this week. “
“Their continued incarceration violates their rights, and illustrates what human rights defenders have described repeatedly as selective application of the law in #Zimbabwe. #EU4HumanRights, “ said EU.

Mamombe and Chimbiri were arrested on 5 March for being part of a press conference that was deemed illegal by law enforcement agents.

The duo has since been denied bail at the Magistrates Court and appeared at the High Court.

High Court judge Justice Chitapi said there is evidence against them that warrants his decision not to grant them bail.
