Poorly paid Teachers have expressed anger towards government failure to resolve their incapacitation crisis, whilst rejecting the 75% salary increment offered by government labelling it as inadequate.
Teachers are still pressing on demanding that their salaries be restored to US $520 which they earned in pre-October 2018.
Currently teachers are earning slightly above US$100.
Cabinet last week approved a 75% pay increment offer to being paid in stage formats, with 25% being effected this month and 50%, to be paid in June.
In response teachers have blasted the increment , while advocating for a salary restoration
“Our government is the only employer who offers a salary raise in the media. We don’t need a raise but just restoration of value of our 2018 salaries.’
“Collective bargaining should be incorporated in labour laws governing Civil Service in line with S65.22 March we act!,”Amalgamated Rural Teachers Association of Zimbabwe(ARTUZ) said in a Twitter post.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou said teachers under his union would not report for work despite the 75% increment announcement.
“It’s madness of the worst order. The same government gave police, soldiers, and Central Intelligence Organisation officers more than 100% salary increases with effect from February 2021. Now they want to give the rest of the civil service 25% with effect from April, and the other 50% from June,” he said.
The impasse between government and teachers have been going on since last year , while schools closed as part of the induced Covid-19 lockdown.
ARTUZ last week gave notice of a nationwide strike despite National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) pronouncements to review civil servants’ working conditions.
Meanwhile , teachers across the country have staged a protest aimed at restoring the education crisis.
