Zimbabwe is the least happy country in a year of lockdowns, deaths and work from home

Zimbabwe has been ranked least happiest country in the world. The Southern African country is the lowest scoring country on the World Happiness Index with 3.160.The nation came in at the same position last year confirming more of the same tired gospel of unhappiness. Its continued world dominance in sadness is a cause for concern.

Tanzania whose President John Pombe Magufuli recently sadly succumbed to heart complications came second scoring  3.786 maintaining the same rank on the World Happiness Index 2020.

The term happiness is used in the context of mental or emotional states, including positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. It is also used in the context of life satisfaction, subjective well-being, eudaimonia, flourishing and well-being. So if Zimbabwe came first in the world of unhappy people there is something wrong with our nation that needs fixing considering the country reigned supreme two consecutive years at the top of saddest people.Happiness does have a pretty important role in our lives, and it can have a huge impact on the way we live our lives. Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of “happiness” is a simple one: “The state of being happy.” and being happy is “Feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.”

So in other words Zimbabwe has not experienced pleasure or contentment in two consecutive years for whatever reason dogging the country similarly with Tanzania currently mourning its former head of state.Happiness is a state, not a trait; in other words, it isn’t a long-lasting, permanent feature or personality trait, but a more fleeting, changeable state.
Happiness is equated with feeling pleasure or contentment, meaning that happiness is not to be confused with joy, ecstasy, bliss, or other more intense feelings.
Happiness can be either feeling or showing, meaning that happiness is not necessarily an internal or external experience, but can be both.

This definition is not the end-all, be-all definition of happiness. In fact, the definition of happiness is not a “settled” debate. Jordan dropped 10 ranks in the World Happiness Report 2020 scoring 4.094.India moved up on the Happiness Index by one rank scoring 4.225.India  is  the fourth-least happy country in the world, according to the latest results of the World Happiness Report. The only countries ranked lower than India were Jordan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Finland, on the other hand, maintained its lead at the top of the charts. According to the report, the rankings have not changed too much year-on-year despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One possible explanation is that people see COVID-19 as a common, outside threat affecting everybody and that this has generated a greater sense of solidarity and fellow-feeling,” said Canadian economist John Helliwell in a statement.

Happiness has been a true challenge, not just for governments around the world, but also at an individual level. Sleep anxiety has been on the rise, trust deficits have increased and day-to-day routines have seen a shake down.

“This has been a very challenging year, but the early data also show some notable signs of resilience in feelings of social connect and life evaluation,” said Lara Aknin, a Canadian social psychologist who currently teaches at the Simon Fraser University.

According to researchers Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, and their colleagues (2005), there are three main ways that happiness has been approached in positive psychology.Happiness as a global assessment of life and all its facets; as a recollection of past emotional experiences, and happiness as an aggregation of multiple emotional reactions across time (Kim-Prieto, Diener, Tamir, Scollon, & Diener, 2005).
