TELECEL workers have embarked on an industrial job action citing incapacitation due to low salaries.
This comes as the workers have bemoaned poor salaries they are earning saying they now cannot afford transport to and from work.
Secretary general of Communication and Allied Services Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CASWUZ), David Mhambare told the TechMag Tv that Telecel Zimbabwe workers have now resorted to staying at home until their conditions of service has been improved.
“Since Monday when the president relaxed some of the Covid-19 protocols, workers were being called to work without any allowance being observed which resulted in most of them not complying.
“The management has been so insensitive with workers because we filed a letter with our grievances of salary increments so that we can afford reporting to work on a daily basis but nothing has been revealed so far,” Mhambare said.
He said that during the lockdown most workers have been working from home and things appeared to be normal because they have been spared from transport costs.
With the relaxation of the lockdown last Monday by president Emmerson Mnangagwa-workers were being called to report to work but only a few complied while the rest remained adamant.
Mhambare added that the company services remain hamstrung as most of workers are retiring because of poor salaries they are being offered by the company.
“The company has so far lost nearly to 60 percent of experienced workers and only left with undergraduates.
“After filing our report concerning salary increments the company gave an excuse of the lockdown as an effect to poor salaries.
“Engineers who are supposed to be earning better salaries are paid a meagre $20 000.00, general workers $10 000.00 and technicians ranging from $13-14 000.00 which cannot sustain monthly essentials,” he added.
However, responding to the workers’ grievances, the Human Resources (HR) management board wrote in a memo that despite challenges with the workers the company has managed to meet salary obligations for every month.
“..This is an important development because due to the billing system challenges the company cash flows were low and we were barely managing to meet all financial obligations.
“We are grateful that collections of all outstanding post-paid revenues will greatly improve our capacity to meet our various financial commitments and put the organization back on a sound footing,” the HR said.
