Zim purchases 600k COVID 19 doses

Zimbabwe has purchased 600,000 Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine doses from China to complement the 200 000 donated by the Asian county, government reported on Wednesday.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Health and Child Care through a press statement.

According to the Health Ministry,a l total of 800 000 Sinopharm doses will be in the country by early March, with aircrafts heading to China to collect the shots no later than February 13.

“The donation of 200,000 doses and an initial batch of 600,000 doses which the Zimbabwe government has purchased are expected in the country by February 15 2021 and the first week of March 2021 respectively.”

The Sinopharam procurement comes at a time when Covid-19 cases have been increasing in the country.

The country has to date recorded a cumulative 35,045 cases including 1,393 deaths and 29,959 recoveries.

Meanwhile, the vaccination process, to be conducted in phases is expected to start next week with much priority given to the population at high risk including health workers.

Ministry of Health and Child Care said the first phase which will be in two stages will target the health workers, Ports of Entry personnel ZIMRA, Immigration, Customs, funeral parlour and the security personnels.

Those with chronic illnesses, elders from 60 years and above, inmates and prison population and refuge camps will be vaccinated at stage two of first phase.
