Persecuting me renews my drive against Corruption :Chin’ono

Investigative Journalist Hopewell Chin’nono says that his persecution by the state renews his drive against exposing government corruption.

Chin’ono who has been a government critic on social media has been arrested twice this year on different charges.

He denies the charges and saying government is persecuting him for exposing corruption.

Chin’ono was arrested last week on allegations of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

He is being accused of breaching his bail conditions by tweeting about the court outcome of a gold smuggling scandal despite a ban on him posting on Twitter as part of his bail conditions.

The High Court granted him bail on Friday after spending 17 days in detention.

Following his release on bail Chin’ono posted on microblogging site twitter saying.

“I would like to thank all citizens local & beyond who stood with me during my political persecution.”

“Each time I am persecuted, my drive against corruption is renewed!,”he said.

In July he exposed alleged government corruption involving coronavirus supplies.

The alleged Covid-19 procurement fraud within the health ministry led to the arrest and sacking of Health Minister Obadiah Moyo.

Following these scandal he was arrested in July on charges of inciting public violence.

Chin’ono spent close to 45 days at Chikurubi Maximum Prison and was released on bail at his fourth attempt.

His arrest has drawn international traction with organisations , unions raising concerns over the infringing of press freedom , while demanding his release prior to him being released on bail.
