Tanzanian main opposition party leader Freeman Mbowe and his accomplices, were arrested on allegations for planning a violent protest against the just ended election results in the country.
The opposition demanded a repeat in election, citing widespread irregularities and called for protests against the outcome, which returned President John Magufuli to office with 84% of the vote.
Police told journalists that intelligence reports suggested that the opposition was planning to burn down markets and fuel stations.
“Freeman Mbowe was detained, along with other Chadema leaders, for planning violent protests, aiming to destroy markets and petrol stations”, police said
In a statement posted on BBC News twitter handle, a Chidema politician Tundu Lissu told journalist the party had rejected President John Magufuli’s victory in last week’s election, saying the vote was rigged.
“Last week our party agents had been prevented from entering some polling stations where ballot boxes were tampered with”, said Mr Lissu.
He further added that the protest was going to be good for the future of the people.
“The decision to protest was for “the future of our country”. We cannot accept going back to a one-party system,” he added.
Mbowe was arrested together with former member of parliament Godbless Lema, the former mayor of Dar es Salaam, Isaya Mwita, and the former mayor of Ubungo municipality, Boniface Jacob.
The Tanzanian National Election Commission has last week declared Mr Magufuli the victor in the last week elections held in the country.
