MDC official dumps party, joins ZANU PF

Former MDC Member of Parliament for Masvingo urban Tongai Matutu has dumped his party to join the ruling party ZANU PF.

The latest development was announced by ZANU PF’s acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa through a press statement.

Chinamasa said: “The revolutionary party ZANU PF welcomes Mr Tongai Matutu into the membership of the party. Mr Matutu who is a top lawyer, founding member of the MDC and former Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Youth Affairs during the inclusive government is a firebrand politician in his own right.”

Matutu is one of the members who were part of the opposition structures during its formative period.
He became MDC’s national legal committee member who represented the party as a lawyer since 2000.

Matutu was also the provincial secretary for Masvingo Province and in 2005 to March 2008 he was voted into Parliament as MP for Masvingo Central.

In 2014 he dumped Tsvangirai’s party and teamed up with Mr Tendai Biti and others to form the People’s Democratic Party before he, later on, dumped it in 2016 to rejoin MDC as a card-carrying member.

The former legislator was disqualified from contesting the MDC Alliance Masvingo chairmanship in 2019 on the grounds that he once quit the party then led by late ex-Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai before he re-joined after heeding the MDC founding leader’s call for renegade members to return before his death.
