Supreme Court Extends MDC-T Congress Dates

Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court has granted MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe a further extension up to November 30 to hold an extraordinary congress to elect new leadership.

Khupe approached the Supreme Court seeking guidance on the matter after the same court in March ordered the MDC-T to hold an elective congress within three months.

Due to the coronavirus also known as COVID-19 pandemic the party failed to hold its extraordinary as per court judgement dates.

The MDC-T then made an application at the Supreme Court on July 29 seeking an extension to Khupe’s current term.

“Supreme Court has granted MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe a further extension up to November 30 to hold an extraordinary congress to elect new leadership. Lets see if they call legitimate 2014 structures meeting with their ZANU PF tag. Call NEC, NSC. NC of 2014 Dougie,” International Human Rights Law Fellow Pedzisayi Ruhanya revealed via his Twitter account.

In March this year, the Supreme court ruled that Nelson Chamisa was the illegitimate president of the MDC before it installed Khupe as interim president with the mandate of holding elections to replace the late founding MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai who died in February 2018.
