Detention of Mamombe at Chikurubi is unlawful , victimisation : Chamisa

MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa says the detention of Youth leader Joana Mamombe at Chikurubi Maximum for two weeks to asses her mental health is unlawful victimisation by the state.

The alliance President states that the state is on a continued act of unlawfully treating citizens without implementing justice.

The court on Thursday that Joana Mamombe be held at Harare Remand Prison for two weeks to be assessed following a delay on her trial due to her health condition.

In a twitter post on Friday Chamisa condemned such brutal arrests that the state keep pursuing upon citizens and detaining them at the famous Chikurubi Prison saying its out of law and illtreatment.

“ The unlawful detention &sending to Chikurubi maximum prison of Youth leader &MP Hon Mamombe is another new low, a classic case of continuing victimization. It is clear that the State which is implicated in this case can not deliver justice.”

“This continued persecution of these emblems of change is a direct threat to democratic tenets and freedom. Oppressors fear the power of the future that the young women represent. We stand with the young & fearless. We fight for their right to dignity,freedom and justice,” he said.

Mamombe is facing charges of faking her abduction with other MDC Alliance activists Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri, was admitted at a private hospital, but the state claimed she was faking illness to avid trial.

Doctors at a private hospital wrote to the court stating that she was unfit to stand trial.

Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande said while it was evident Mamombe was mentally disturbed.

“The court is clearly bound to get a clear picture of her mental stability and she has a right to a fair trial, ” she said.

Mamombe will be back in court on October 5 the magistrate said the trial would start then once she was certified fit.
