Harare Mayor refutes recall allegations

Recently installed Harare Mayor His Worship Jacob Mafume has rubbished rumours that he faces an imminent recall from the city council by Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

PDP was one of the seven parties that participated in the controversial 2018 general election under the MDC Alliance party banner.

Following the rampant recall of MDC Alliance councilors and Members of Parliament by MDCT party, Mafume got the chance to occupy the City’s top post after beating rivalry Luckson Mukunguma 19:14 votes.

However, in a new twist of events, the Ward 17 and lawyer is alleged to be facing an ouster from PDP, a party which he said is no longer a member.

According to the state-run paper, The Herald, PDP Secretary General Benjamin Rukanda alleged that Mafume had ceased to represent the interests of the party, and therefore he was recalled.

“Following the resolution of the national executive committee of our party held on September 12, 2020 were hereby notify your good office and also declare in terms of section 278 as read with section 129 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe that the following councilors cease to belong to the People’s Democratic Party,” reads part of the letter.

“In terms of the said agreement the member parties retained their individual identities. Our party was the party to which these councilors belonged at the time of the 2018 election.”

The letter also affirms that PDP was a member of the MDC Alliance which was formed in terms of the consultative agreement signed on August 5,2017 for and on behalf of the party by Mr Tendai Biti.

But in an interview with TechMagTV, Mayor Mafume dismissed the arguing that the letter was void and never been effective.

“I have not been recalled, the party that is claiming to have recalled me has no capacity whatsoever to recall me I did not belong to them , the letter was never effective, it is void from the start because it is being written by people with authority, that it is used is an indictment on our politics and the uselessness of the people who claim to be governing the country,” he said.

“They participated in the election at another platform and we participated on another platform. It is ridiculous, silly and infantile that any government can act upon that letter.it is mockery for democracy, a mockery for elections and a mockery for our institutions,” said Mafume.

“It is laughable knowing that they are tempering with serious institutions.”

Mafume has already indicated his undying allegiance to the Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance even if the government were to accept and effect the letter.
