The Namibian opposition party Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) has called for intervention and action to be taken on the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe.
PDM leader McHenry Venaani on Wednesday in a motion wanted the National Assembly to discuss the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Zimbambwe, focusing on a government crackdown on opposition activists, members of civil society and journalists.
The party leader wanted to discuss how Namibia could assist Zimbabwe and take a position to condemn state sponsored violence.
“We cannot sit back and watch this travesty of justice unfold against the people of Zimbabwe,” Venaani said.
“Let me remind this august house that if Zimbabwe explodes, the economic and humanitarian crisis will be felt throughout the whole SADC region. Hence, we have a collective responsibility to address and find a long-lasting solution to the situation in Zimbabwe.”
This followed after the Swapo members blocked a discussion on the situation in Zimbabwe in which government is being alleged of human rights abuse by arrest and detention of citizens.
Lately , in the country human rights activists , political opposition party members , Journalists have been arrested and detained on different charges.
MDC Alliance Vice Chair Job Sihkala who was arrested on 27 August is still in custody and has been denied bail , while recently ZINASU president was arrested for protesting outside Impala Car Rental.
Three young people, Barnabas Gura, Terrence Manjengwa and Blessed Changara have been languishing in prison for over 3 weeks now. They were arrested at Rotten Row court where they were in solidarity with Hon. Sikhala.
