He makes sure we are paid in time: ZESA employees celebrate Gata’s comeback

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority Holdings (ZESA) employees have welcomed the company executive chairman Sydney Gata’s recent reinstatement citing his alleged sincerity over employees’ welfares.

Gata was recently cleared of corruption allegations by Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission following (ZACC) after a Presidential induced investigation directive.

Of the six charges levelled against him, Gata was cleared of four.

His recent come back has excited some ZESA employees who spoke to TechMagTv.

“We are actually happy that our boss is back at work, he has done so much for us by improving the welfare of employees unlike the previous administration who were largely the biggest beneficiaries of the corruption that crippled ZESA through stalled projects. In fact, the majority of us are happy with the latest development,” an employee who preferred anonymity told TechMagTV.

Last month ZESA workers through the Zimbabwe Energy Workers Union (ZEWU) wrote a letter of solidarity with Gata, supporting him in tackling corruption within parastatal.

Part of the letter reads, “We wish to assure you that we support you in the fight against corruption … ZESA employees fully support you in that noble cause which has raised morale to levels never before.”
The charges that saw Gata temporarily fired by the former Minister Fortune Chasi include self-allocation of six vehicles for family and personal use, authorising a $10 million expenditure for Christmas parties in Hwange and Kariba in 2019 without Board approval, unilateral installing solar equipment at his residence in Borrowdale using ZESA funds, setting up a Trust called ZESIT to undertake several ZESA projects, allegedly authorizing the payment of ghost employees and his personal workers on the ZESA payroll under the misinterpretation that they were employed by ZESA.
