The Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has urged Zimbabweans to rise above social media protests and face the repressive regime head on.

The youthful politician has been very vocal against the human rights abuses by the Zimbabwean government through its security forces.

Following a failed attempt to democratically demonstrate against corruption, misrule, abductions, tortures and rapes on July 31, Zimbabweans took their fight to Twitter through #ZimbabweanLivesMatter.

The social media protest broke the internet after it went viral.

There was huge support from international organisations, individuals, politicians among others.

The #ZimbabweanLivesMatter was to powerful to ignore, prompting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to sent two envoys to Zimbabwe – Dr Sydney Mufamadi and Ms Baleka Mbete.

The duo’s mission is to engage the government of Zimbabwe and relevant stakeholders in a bid to find a lasting solution to the current political and economic fall out.

Speaking during the Women’s Day Commemorations, Malema questioned the idea in fighting through social media rather than physical.

“Why is the youth of Zimbabwe fighting through a harshtag?”

“Why is the youth of Zimbabwe not rising in Zimbabwe and face death because they are already dead?”

” Zimbabweans are not cowards, Zimbabweans have fought before…,” he said referencing to the liberation war that gave birth to Zimbabwe independence.

“…why are they (youth) not occupying the border of Zimbabwe there in Messina and we will support them and say no car goes into Zimbabwe and no car goes out of Zimbabwe until the rights of our people are restored in Zimbabwe.”

His utterances which is likely to cause instability in the region, received massive support from Twimbos – Zimbabweans on Twitter.

His Zimbabwean followers on Twitter went as far as suggesting the ever busy Beitbridge border post as the starting point to block any traffic coming in and out.

“Beitbridge border post is a key point for us to send a message home i support him 100% #ZimbabaweanLivesMatter,” one follower responded.

“Thats how @mdczimbabwe leaders should be talking…Malema speaks sense, Zimbabweans need to stop fighting Zanu through social media…,” another one suggested.

“I am ready too, I am tired Zimbabwe is in ICU and calls for emergency

ZimbabweanLivesMatter.”

The vibrant politician went to the extent of calling President Emmerson Mnangagwa “a pig eating its own children” and that he has no relationship with the ruling party but the people of Zimbabwe.

“…I have no relationship with Zanu Pf none whatsoever, I care about the people of Zimbabwe…”

While investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume are still languishing in jail on allegations of inciting violence and organising a citizen demonstration respectively, more than thirty members of the opposition MDC Alliance, journalists and human rights defenders have reportedly fled from their homes in fear of harassment by state security forces.
