Lockdown to affect blood donations

0

The latest lockdown restrictions announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday will have a negative impact on the supply chain of blood to health institutions, National Blood Services of Zimbabwe has revealed.

The president imposed a curfew and reinstated strict measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus following a spike in cases in recent weeks.

NBSZ Public Affairs Manager Ester Masundah said the supply of blood to health institutions is currently constrained due to shortage of blood donors.

“Our clientele are mainly people who come into town as our offices are situated in town ,so it was getting better the past few months when President relaxed the lockdown restrictions as people were now coming to donate blood, but now that the lockdown restrictions have been revised again it automatically means the number of donors is going to decrease.”

Masundah also added that the local blood bank is currently experiencing shortages.

“Donating blood products is essential to community health and the need for blood product is constant,” she said.

” We currently have shortages in our bank and this means patients have to find other ways to access blood.”

“Covid -19 does not stop people from having babies and pregnant women are vulnerable as they lose a lot blood and they will be in very much need of blood transfusion and moreover accidents have been on the rise too so these people need blood.”
