Investigative Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has been arrested by the police at his home on Monday morning.
Leading human rights lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa says eight Zimbabwean state security agents broke into investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono’s home and abducted him.
According to Mtetwa, Chin’ono’s worker said the agents did not produce a warrant of arrest and the lawyers do not know where they took him.
Earlier today Hopewell twitted that , “ They are breaking into my home. Alert the world!Police and State agents are harrasing my workers at home!.”
The United States Embassy has expressed concerns over his welfare in a twitter post , reminded President Emmerson Mnangagwa that he said the noted the role investigative journalists in fighting corruption.
“We have learned [Zimbabwe Republic Police] officials are at Hopewell Chin’ono’s home now and are deeply concerned for his welfare.”
“President @edmnangagwa noted the important role investigative journalists, like @daddyhope, play in shedding light on corruption. Political intimidation of the press has no place in democracies.”
Chino’no has been playing an active role in exposing corruption by state officials.
