Joana Mamombe who is MDC Alliance’s Harare West Member of Parliament has been named One Young World Politician of the Year 2020.She is 27.
Joana made headlines together with two other young female politicians of the same party last month,when she was abducted and raped for taking part in a demonstration that had been held in Warren Park.
OYW is a UK based non profit organization that brings together youn leaders from around the world to develop solutions to the globe’s most pressing issues.The organisation stages annual summits that also include world leaders as counsellors from 2009 to 2015.
The annual summits have been staged in 196 countries with a total of 8 000 delegates who are aged between 18 and 30.
In their tweet OYW said,”@JoanaMamombe is Zimbabwe’s youngest female Member of Parliament.Joana is a champion of human rights and gender activism.She continues to highlight the plight of vulnerable young people.”
Fadzayi Mahere the MDC Alliance’s spokesperson expressed her joy to Techmag Tv in a phone interview saying,”
We are thrilled. The recognition is well-deserved. It’s a testament to Joana’s bravery and courage as she speaks truth to power notwithstanding the shrinking democratic space in Zimbabwe.”
“The recognition will encourage her and other young women to stand up and speak out even in the face of adversity. It will serve as a reminder to all young women that they can beat our bodies but they can never break our spirit.”
