Govt in massive teacher recruitment drive

0

The government has granted Ministry of Primary and Secondary permission to recruit more than 3000 teachers amid revelations that current educators were not willing to return to work until their salary issues are resolved.

Schools are scheduled to reopen on the 28th of July 2020.

However, reports suggest that teachers are in a nasty fight with the government over salary increment dispute.

This could potentially affect the reopening schedule.

In a bid to counter that, the government is reported to be currently involved in a massive teacher recruitment.
In June this year, the Ministry was reported to have been given the green light to recruit 2300.

In response to questions asked by this publication, the Ministry’s Director of Communications Mr. Taungana Ndoro said, “Government granted the Ministry authority to recruit 2300 teachers in June this year. Further, we have since been granted authority to recruit more 3000 teachers and the Ministry is in the processes of recruiting these teachers.”

However, it has also emerged through our investigation that the government are recruiting temporary teachers’ not permanent teachers.

A student teacher who commented on condition of anonymity told this reporter that, “We receive messages that we were to start school on the 20th of July and I realized most of the teachers that were recalled were student teachers,” she said.

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe have vowed not to return to work until their salary issues are resolved.
Meanwhile, schools are set to reopen on the 28th of July 2020 while other classes have since resumed lessons.

It is not yet clear whether the reopening would be successful following the current increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The country has so far recorded 1,034 cases, 343 recovered and 19 deaths.
