Council hikes Parking fees, demands USD

The Harare City Council has announced the adjustment of its parking fees as from Thursday, 2nd July 2020.
The new fees adjustments were announced by City Parking, the council’s subsidiary company.

The Central Business District fee is now at USD$1 or local currency equivalent to the prevailing inter-bank rate per hour.
Previously, motorists were paying RTGS$20 per hour.

This means that motorist who were paying ZW$160 Dollars per day from Monday to Friday will now have to fork out ZW$504 a day for parking, according to current interbank rate of ZWL$ 63.00 against USD$.

A motorist Ronald Mukweshi lashed the council for the unsympathetic behaviour.

“What is the motive behind the increase? This is madness considering that salaries are not being increased and not all of us are getting paid in foreign currency or the even bond note is not circulating that much yet the council believes that it has to milk us,” he fumed.

“It was going better if their prepaid paid system which allowed motorist to park and pay for 15 minutes, 30 minutes was still functional because I cannot pay ZW$ 504 yet I’m just parking for less than 10 minutes,” said Mukweshi.

The Harare CBD is usually heavily congested, especially during peak periods, and it is anticipated that the latest parking fees hike will stop more motorist from driving into the inner city without compelling reasons.
