ICT Minister Kazembe Kazembe officially opened the National Cyber Security Awareness Month at a breakfast meeting held in the capital today.
The breakfast meeting was running under the theme: ”Cyber Security -Our shared responsibility.” In his keynote address, the Minister highlighted the significant increase in internet penetration rates which rose from 31% in 2013 to 62.9% in 2018.
The increase in internet penetration can also be translated to the high risk of cybercrimes and threats to cyber safety. He mentioned how the government has set a new target so that virtually all Zimbabweans will be able to access better broadband and make the most of the digital economy.
”Nevertheless, as we encourage better use of the internet, we must also ensure we have an online environment that is as safe and secure as possible”. Kazembe said
A recent report by Cyber-security Ventures estimates cyber-crime will cost the world $6 trillion annually by 2021. Although Zimbabwe is yet to experience a full-scale cyber incident it doesn’t mean that the nation is immune.
